| ABOUT THE FACULTY... 
|

|
Faculty of Medicine,
University of Nis, is a state-owned educational and scientific
institution, founded on May 18, 1960, after the decision
of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia. The
principal activities of the Faculty and study programs it
realizes are:

Integrated academic
studies (of medicine, dentistry and pharmacy) and study
programs of basic professional studies. |

specialist professional studies. |

and training as continued medical education |

Scientific/research
work in the form of fundamental, developmental and

Education of doctors of
medicine and dentists has been performed since the foundation of
the Faculty. Up to July 2008, there had been 6600 graduations
in medicine and 1860 in dentistry. The first
generation of students was admitted to the integrated studies of
pharmacy in the school year 2003/04 (56 students), and up to June 2008 there
were 28 graduates in pharmacy. In the school year 2003/04 the
first student generation was admitted to the study program of
professional studies, with 122 graduations so far.

Specialist studies are
performed in 33 medical fields, 8 fields of dentistry and 2
fields for health care associates, with an ever increasing
number of subspecializations. In the period from 1975 to October
1, 2008, 4368 specialist candidates completed their specialist
studies. Up to the present, there have been 663 M.Sc degrees and
518 PhD degrees awarded in various fields of medicine and
dentistry. Our current study programs of academic PhD studies
have been designed
in accordance with the corresponding EU programs in the
following domains: molecular medicine, clinical medicine, and
public health. In the school year 2007/08 PhD programs in dentistry and pharmacy
have been initiated.

Since 2005 to the present,
our Centre for Continued
Education in Health Care
organized 87
seminars, with 876 lecturers and 3766 participants. The lecturers were the teachers of our
Faculty, faculties of medicine in Belgrade and Novi Sad, eminent
experts of our health care institutions and our visiting
professors from abroad. |
|
The Ministry of Science and
Environmental Protection has approved financing of 5
research projects
for the period 2006/2010. In these and in other projects,
84 researchers from our Faculty have been engaged. Two
international projects are also being realized at the Faculty. |
|
Our teachers and associates
perform their research and educational activity at the
educational bases of the Faculty: Clinical Centre Nis,
Institute for the Prevention, Treatment and Rehabilitation of
Rheumatic and Cardiovascular Diseases Niska Banja, Institute for
Public Health, Dentistry Clinic, Military Hospital Nis, Centre
for Occupational Protection Nis, Special Psychiatric Hospital in
Gornja Toponica, Health Care centres in Pirot, Soko Banja,
Zajecar, Leskovac, Vranje etc. We also effectuate co-operation
with the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade. |

Publishing activity
of the Faculty is reflected in the preparation and
publishing of textbooks, monographs, abstract books, practical
guides, CDs, audio and video publications and scientific
journals (Acta medica Mediane, Acta Facultatis Medicae
Naissensis i Acta stomatologica Naissi.)

Our Organizational Unit
for Research and Health Care Work is composed of the Lab for
Electronic Microscopy, Dept. of Experimental Surgery and
Pathology, Lab for Biologic, Biochemical and Molecular Research,
General-purpose Lab, Lab for Cell Culture and Vivarium. In the
Organizational Unit for Professional Services legal, HR,
accounting, administrative, library, IT and other affairs are
taking place.

Mission of the Faculty of
Medicine is to contribute to the health care of the population
and welfare of the society through organization, realization and
permanent improvement of all the types and levels of higher
education and research in medical sciences, and realization of
health care in accordance with high national and international
standards.
The Mission is realized

development and transfer of knowledge through education

Preparation of the
students to acquire, appraise and adopt scientific
achievements, and to develop their own careers, |

Support to the
economic and general development of the southeastern
Serbia (identification of the problems and help to

Vision |
|
The Faculty is fully
dedicated to the causes that should promote the acquisition of
educational and scientific experience, especially to the
knowledge and skills necessary to those active and well-informed
members of the society for further intellectual and technologic
advancement in a constantly changing environment. Our intention
is to become a fully integrated member of the European area of
medical education and research, upholding the following
fundamental principles: |

To preserve
autonomy and assume the responsibility for development
of all its resources; |

To provide its
students with professional knowlegde in accordance with
constantly changing demands of the local, national and
international communities; |
 |
To adopt
international standards, educating students which could
easily be incorporated into global community, providing
the mobility of staff and students; |

To adopt, implement
and develop the system of quality assurance, following
the principles of continual improvement and
implementation of latest achievements; |

To promote
excellence in research, including multidisciplinary
areas, in order to preserve and improve knowledge,
especially when the region of Nis and the southeastern
